What we collect
- Account data: your Steam display name. We do not receive your email address from Steam. If you choose to enable email notifications, you provide your email address voluntarily at that point.
- Steam data: when you sign in with Steam, we store your Steam ID, display name, avatar URL, and profile URL. We also fetch and store your Steam friends list, their public profiles, and their public wishlists and library data.
- Preferences you set: gift profiles, budget ranges, genre preferences, and occasions (e.g. birthdays) you add for your friends.
- Usage data: we use Vercel Analytics to collect anonymised, aggregate page view data. No cookies are set and no personal identifiers are collected or stored.
- Email activity: whether we sent you an email and whether it failed. We do not track opens or clicks.
How we use it
- To match games to your friends' tastes and surface gifting opportunities.
- To send you email notifications about deals and friend occasions, only if you opt in, and only when an event is coming up.
- To understand aggregate page view trends and improve the product. No personal data is used for this purpose.
We do not sell your data, share it with advertisers, or use it for any purpose other than operating this service.
Third-party services
- Neon: our PostgreSQL database host. Your data is stored on servers in the US.
- Resend: used to send transactional emails. Your email address is passed to Resend only when sending a notification you have opted into.
- Vercel Analytics: anonymised, aggregate page view analytics. No cookies are set and no personal data is collected. See Vercel's privacy documentation.
- Steam: public profile and library data is fetched from the Steam Web API. We do not access your Steam password or payment details.
- IsThereAnyDeal: used to fetch game deal and pricing data. Per their API terms, all store links are provided as-is and route through their redirect service (itad.link). This is how their free API is funded. They may earn a small affiliate commission when you purchase through a link. When you click a deal link, your request passes through itad.link and ITAD may log the click. We do not earn anything from these clicks and do not receive that click data.
- Vercel: application hosting. Vercel may log IP addresses and request metadata for a limited period for security and reliability.
Cookies and local storage
We use a single session cookie to keep you signed in. This cookie is strictly necessary for the service to function and does not track you across other sites. We do not use advertising, analytics, or third-party tracking cookies.
Legal basis for processing (GDPR)
- Core service: Processing your Steam data and generating gift recommendations is necessary to deliver the service you signed up for (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR, contractual necessity).
- Email notifications: Sending deal and occasion emails requires your separate, voluntary opt-in. You can withdraw this consent at any time by turning off notifications in settings or clicking the unsubscribe link in any email (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR, consent).
Prices and deal information
Prices shown on this site are sourced from third-party stores via IsThereAnyDeal and are provided for informational purposes only. Prices may not include local taxes (such as VAT) and may vary by region. Always check the final price at checkout on the relevant store.
Data retention
Your account and associated data are kept for as long as your account exists. You can delete your account at any time from Account Settings, which permanently removes all your data from our database.
Your rights
You can access or delete your data at any time by visiting your account settings or emailing hello@gamestogift.com. If you are in the EU or UK, you have additional rights under GDPR including the right to data portability, the right to withdraw consent for email notifications, and the right to lodge a complaint with your national supervisory authority.
Browser Extension
The optional Games to Gift browser extension stores a small amount of data on your device: a connection token that links the extension to your account, the timestamp of the last sync, and a brief summary of the last sync (how many friends were synced). No other data is stored locally by the extension.
When the extension syncs, it reads your logged-in Steam session token from an open Steam tab and uses it to request your friends' wishlist and library data from the official Steam Web API on your behalf. This lets it see friends whose profiles are set to Friends Only, which the server cannot access on its own. That data is sent only to your Games to Gift account and is not shared with any third party. The extension does not read your browsing history, your Steam password or payment details, or any data from pages outside Steam and gamestogift.com.
You can disconnect the extension at any time from Settings or by uninstalling it. Disconnecting removes the connection token from our servers and stops all syncing.
